On October 25, Congratulations to the Washington County Trail Shark mountain bike team, who competed in their fifth and final race of the season at the Trek Trails in Waterloo for the State Championship.
Of the 1,226 athletes registered to race, The Trail Sharks were represented by 28 athletes. Trek offers a fun yet challenging course featuring rocky terrain, steep and technical singletrack climbs, along with tight cornering throughout the course.
Typically closed to the public, this venue opens only for special events, Trek employees and their pro riders, making it a favorite athletes love to ride.
This season ended with beautiful dry weather. Sunday was a perfect autumn day, complete with sunshine, a cool breeze, and falling leaves.
Spectators lined the woods to cheer on the athletes, ringing cowbells, cheering at the top of their lungs, and even some sporting costumes. The energy and enthusiasm of the crowd made for an unforgettable race day.
The team had one athlete on the podium bringing home a medal for her race. Since this was the State Championship, overall race season medals were also awarded to the top five athletes in two-four lap categories and team trophies were presented to the top three teams in Divisions One and Two based on points accumulated throughout the season.
Although the regular season has concluded, one final racing opportunity remains for Wisconsin Interscholastic Cycling League (WI NICA) high school athletes.
The Central Regionals event will take place November 7-8 in Fayetteville, Arkansas with a couple Trail Shark athletes plan to attend, joining riders from across Wisconsin to represent the state at this event.
