The Washington County Trail Sharks competed at their second NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) Festival of the season on Sunday, Sept. 27, at Engelwood Grass Farm in Fall River. NICA canceled the previous race weekend at Minooka Park in Waukesha due to inclement weather.
The Engelwood Grass Farm venue is like no other. The world‑class course was built entirely on an active, family‑owned cattle farm. Originally crafted by the Agnew family for their own enjoyment, it has since grown into a premier racing destination, hosting WORS, NICA, and even UCI mountain bike events over the past decade.
The morning began with foggy and dewy conditions, presenting an additional challenge for the riders, while temperatures remained ideal.
By mid-morning, the fog had lifted, giving way to a beautiful day and excellent conditions for the races. Riders tackled massive wooden flyovers, punch climbs, technical rock gardens, and rollercoaster-like berms.
From the natural terrain to the grazing cattle, this course was designed to captivate riders and challenge them at every turn.
There were 707 athletes registered to race and the Trail Sharks had 25 student-athletes participate, with 2 athletes, Addison Schumacher and Clayton Thiermann, taking the podium.
The next race will be at Nordic Mountain in Wild Rose on Sunday October 18th.
