Kewaskum Softball Wins Two and Advances to Sectionals

Posted

Kewaskum girls softball started WIAA tournament play with wins against Grafton and Campbellsport. Strong pitching, reliable defense, and timely hitting were the keys to both games.
Kewaskum defeated Grafton 4-0 in the regional semifinal game. Macy Sabish started the game on the mound and shut Grafton down 1-2-3 in the top of the first, then the Indian bats came out swinging with three straight hits. As she has done many times in her career in Kewaskum, senior leadoff hitter Lauren Rettler led off the game with a double. Maddyn Sabish followed with an infield single to third base. The always-aware and swift Rettler read the play perfectly and scored all the way from second even though the ball never left the infield with no errors. Ellie Calliari singled, moving Sabish to third. Both Calliari and Sabish would alertly score on wild pitches.
The score would remain 3-0 until the third inning where the Indians would put their final run on the board. After Kyli Baka walked, Leah Dahm doubled to left, scoring Baka.
Pitcher Macy Sabish confidently went the distance, giving up one hit and zero runs, while striking out 13 and walking two.
Offensively, Kewaskum was led by Lauren Rettler and Leah Dahm each with two hits (both with a single and a double). Maddyn Sabish, Calliari, Maya Beistle, and Hannah Galasinski all contributed with one hit each.

In the Regional Final, Kewaskum would host the Campbellsport Cougars. This game was highly anticipated and very well attended. It appeared as if the entire Village of Campbellsport came to support their Lady Cougars, but Kewaskum would use some timely hitting, solid pitching, and reliable defense to win the game 3-0, and end the season for the well-traveled Campbellsport faithful.
In an intense pitchers’ duel for the first five-and-one-half innings, not a single base runner would reach third base until the sixth inning. That is when the Indians broke through to secure a birth in Sectionals.
The sixth inning was led off by junior Ellie Calliari, who battled to a full count, then doubled to right center. After going down 0-2 in the count, freshman cleanup hitter Brianna Krause, singled to right, driving in the first run of the game. Junior Kyli Baka then doubled to left field, scoring pinch-runner Lia Piittmann. After two quick outs, senior catcher Maya Beistle would plate the final Rettler Insurance Group insurance run of the game, by hitting a line drive single to center, driving in Baka.
Senior Macy Sabish, who went the distance on the mound, shut the Cougars down on seven pitches in the top of the seventh inning, to send the Lady Indians to Sectionals. Sabish went seven strong innings, giving up four hits, striking out four, with zero walks.
Offensively, Kewaskum had six hits. Maya Beistle led the way with three singles. Calliari and Baka each had a double and a run scored. Krause had the game-winning RBI single.
WIAA tournament play continued with sectionals the week of June 2.
