Kewaskum Baseball Receives One Seed in WIAA Tournament

Posted

All good things must come to an end and that was the case with the Indians’ 12-game win streak that dated back to April, when the Indians fell to the West Bend West Spartans (14-8, 10-6) by a score of 4-2 in the Mike Staral Memorial game on Saturday afternoon, May 24.
Mike was a pillar of the community of West Bend and a huge part of the renovation to the new Carl Kuss Memorial Field in West Bend all of which started on the back of a napkin in the Fleet Farm parking lot.
Mike’s grandson, Blake, a Kewaskum JV baseball player, threw out the first pitch, and Kewaskum had the momentum right away.
In the top of the first, Reichert singled, and Grisolono doubled to score him. The next batter, Austin Reichel, grounded out to score Grisolono.
Unfortunately for the Indians, that would be all they scored as they had runners in position to score but failed to execute and bring them in.

Carter Unger was dominant on the mound, starting nine up and nine down and having a no hitter into the fifth inning. However, the sixth inning was less than ideal for Kewaskum. A pair of errors and three hits for West allowed them to score four runs to take the lead for good.
The varsity baseball team earned the one seed in the WIAA Division 2 Tournament and will host the winner of Ripon and Wautoma on Tuesday, June 3 at Kewaskum High School at 4:30 p.m. Admission will be charged.

At Kiel
After an exciting double-header on Thursday, Kewaskum (20-4, 11-1) traveled to Kiel (15-4, 11-3) and notched a 3-2 victory, which ended up being Coach Heisdorf’s 200th career win as a varsity baseball coach.
Before transitioning from assistant coach (with Doug Gonring) to head coach in Kewaskum in 2019, he spent six seasons, from 2009-2014, as the head coach at West Bend East.

Just like the first game Thursday, Kewaskum got on the board first in the top of the first inning. Andrew Reichert singled and Brayden Loehr walked to set up back-to-back RBI singles by Austin Reichel, and Everett Donath to take a 2-0 lead.
However, the Raiders would answer in the bottom half off of a pair of Indian errors to start the frame but would settle in and minimize the damage for starting pitcher Kyle Haim. Haim was dominant on the mound, allowing no earned runs and three hits over the full seven innings of work, while striking out three and walking two.
What proved to be the winning run would come in the third inning. Grisolono would single and advance to second on a ground out when Donath would deliver with another RBI single. Donath and Reichert led the offense with two hits a piece.

Vs Winneconne (game two)
Game two was a nail-biter for the host Indians.

Cooper Petermann started the game for Kewaskum and pitched great. He went 4.1 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four while walking none.
He ran into a bit of trouble in the fifth inning when the first batter reached on an error and got bunted over to second base. Petermann would then get a strike out, but the ball skipped away from Reichel behind the dish, and the batter would make it to first base while the other runner advanced to third. It was at this time Coach Heisdorf made a call to the bullpen, well really centerfield, to bring Grisolono back into pitch since he still had pitches left from game one. After the runner on first stole second base, Grisolono got a timely strikeout and a ground out to Liam Stoffel at second to end the threat.
The Indians capitalized on their momentum from the top half. Stoffel led it off with a single. An Andrew Reichert sacrifice bunt moved Stoffel into scoring position for Grisolono, who would get intentionally walked. Austin Reichel drew a walk to bring up Everett Donath. The Indians tried some small ball but fouled back the bunt. Donath, two pitchers later, ripped a double to the fence scoring, all three runs, and that was all Grisolono would need to finish out the game, allowing just one hit while fanning three in 2.2 innings of work.

Vs Winneconne (game one)
The Kewaskum Indians (19-4, 11-1) had one thing in mind on senior night and it was to sweep the Winneconne Wolves (10-11, 4-7) and clinch a share of the East Central Conference title for the first time since 2018 (the final year of summer baseball) when the Indians were apart of the North Shore Conference.

Game one started off just as Kewaskum had hoped, scoring two right away in the top of the first inning. Andrew Reichert singled and scored on a Kingston Grisolono triple, and the very next batter, Austin Reichel, grounded out to score Grisolono.
That score would remain until the fourth when Tyler Densow would rip an RBI single to right and later score on a Winneconne error.
Densow would get another RBI single in the next frame to extend the lead to 5-0, and then a groundout by Reichel in the sixth inning would be the final run for the Indians.
Sam Ciriacks led the offensive attack with three hits, while Grisolono, Reichert, and Densow would each chip in two apiece.
Grisolono started the game on the mound and went five innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six and walking one. Tyler Stray pitched two innings in relief, giving up a pair of hits and a strikeout.

Vs Campbellsport
The Kewaskum Indians (17-4, 9-1) needed 14 innings (and two separate dates to finish the game) to win the Highway V rivalry game 6-5 over the visiting Campbellsport Cougars (16-6, 10-2). The first 10 innings were played on Friday, April 25, before it was called at a 5-5 tie due to darkness
The game was then resumed over three weeks later on May 19, and after four innings, Liam Stoffel roped a single, and a bunt single by Andrew Reichert advanced Stoffel. The Cougar pitcher sailed the throw to first base, allowing Stoffel to score the winning run.
Campbellsport got on the board in the top of the first on a Riley Kohlmann RBI groundout. The Indians answered back when Kingston Grisolono grounded into a double play, scoring one run.
The Indians took the lead in the bottom of the third on a 2RBI single by Grisolono. Campbellsport tied the game the next half inning thanks to an error and wild pitch.

The score was tied at three until Austin Reichel delivered a 2RBI single.
However, the 5-3 lead only lasted until the sixth inning when Kyler Bowe doubled, scoring a run, and Jace Goebel hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
That was the last of the scoring as there were chances by both teams but neither could get the big hit until the miscue on the single in the 14th inning.
Carter Unger (3.1IP, 1H, 3R, 0ER, 5K), Cole Loser (5.2IP, 4H, 2R, 9K), and Tyler Stray (W, 5IP, 5H, 0R, 3K) combined to pitch a great game and keep the Cougars at bay.
Offensively, the Indians were led by the top four hitters in the lineup. Stoffel, Reichert, Grisolono, and Reichel combined for nine hits while also reaching base on six walks and one hit by pitch.
