Harold John Nothem, 90, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026. Born in Lake Church, he raised his family in West Bend before moving to Kewaskum with his wife, Arlene, in 2019.
An avid sportsman, Harold was an excellent marksman and archer who loved hunting Wisconsin wild game. He earned numerous patches and trophies for consecutive perfect scores in league trap shooting.
Harold treasured time outdoors with his brothers, nephews, and children. He raised American Kennel Club registered beagles and enjoyed rabbit hunting with family and friends.
Harold enjoyed snowmobiling and belonged to the Campbellsport Snowmobile Club as a younger man. He was a member of the Newburg Sportsman’s Club and supported Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited.
Country music brought Harold lifelong joy and helped shape festive family gatherings, where hugs were a familiar greeting and farewell. In his final years, Harry enjoyed puzzles and cheering on the Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers.
Harold is survived by his wife, Arlene (Karoses); his children, Steven (Peggy Orth) Nothem, Guy (Robin Johnson) Nothem, Dawn (Daniel) Mayer, Sherry (Brian) McInnis, Gus (Leann) Karoses, Laura (Steve) Nigh, and Mary (Craig) Hernikl; his sons-in-law, Michael Matenaer and Joseph (Sandy) Gindt; and more than 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Matthias and Clara (Bode) Nothem; his siblings; his first wife, Dorothy Nothem; his daughters, Pamela Rae Matenaer and Wanda Gindt; and his grandson, Steven Nothem II.
His family will remember Harold through cherished traditions and warm hugs at the door.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 22, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 331 Main St., Kewaskum, WI 53040, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. All are welcome to attend visitation and Mass. Burial will be private for immediate family.
Our family extends our heartfelt gratitude to Heartland Hospice for the compassionate care, kindness, and support they provided to our dad and our family during his final days at home. We are especially grateful to Karen and Jackie for their gentle guidance, comfort, and dedication during such a meaningful and difficult time. Their care helped make Dad’s final days peaceful and allowed him to remain at home, just as he wished.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a charity of your choice or to Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Kewaskum.
