On Jan. 30, Campbellsport boys basketball beat Winnebago Lutheran Academy 67-60 at home to avenge an earlier conference loss on Dec. 9.
Campbellsport (6-11, 4-4) held a 9-6 lead over WLA (8-7, 4-4) featuring five early points from Trent Schladweiler, including a three-pointer for the Cougars.
“Trent was fantastic for us in so many facets because we know he will lay it on the line every night defensively, but this year he found a way to give us a jolt offensively,” said Head Coach Ethan Elliott. “Trent is our toughness pulse when he is diving on the floor and giving up his body; everyone else becomes more energized: it’s what we needed to play tough against WLA.
The Cougars extended their lead to 18-11 thanks to five points from Trevin Shea, but the Vikings responded with five straight points to tighten the game at 18-16.
Three-pointers from Quinten Cappozzo and Pierce Kaehne, each from the corner, which was followed by a Schladweiler three-pointer to push the Campbellsport lead to 30-20.
Schladweiler splashed his third three-pointer of the half right before the halftime buzzer to send the home crowd into a thrilling and happy state, plus giving Campbellsport a 33-22 halftime lead.
“The buzzer beater before the half was a massive momentum swing for us,” said Elliott.
Shea hit a three-pointer to start the half for the Cougars to extend their lead to 36-22 over the visiting Vikings.
Campbellsport continued their strong play with Carter Gellings knocking down a three-pointer to make the score 48-36 in favor of the Cougars.
The Cougars’ Schladweiler took charge on the defensive end of the floor with less than six minutes left and continued to show off his offensive skills in the game with four more points to put the score at 56-47 for Campbellsport in the lead.
The Vikings continued to forge their way back into the game with the score 61-55 before Schaldweiler scored again in the lane and Gellings took a charge on the defensive end, leaving the score at 63-60 with less than 40 seconds left in the game.
Noah Bobb and Kaehne made their free throws to ice the game for the Cougars and to get the key 67-60 conference victory.
“It was great to play with a lead for just about the entire game,” said Elliott. “The boys didn’t flinch even when WLA threw some big punches late, and when it mattered the most, we made our free throws.”
Trent Schladweiler led the way with 21 points for Campbellsport and Gannan Schwartz paced the Vikings with 25 points in the contest.
“We were hungry, and the boys wanted another shot at WLA after what happened the first time,” said Elliott. “WLA is a goodteamand they wanted to prove they belonged, which they did, and it shows how far we have come as a group.”
“I was so proud of our execution with the scouting report,” said Ellott. “The kids deserve so much credit for buying in and staying together.”
At Cedar Grove-Belgium
On Jan. 27, Campbellsport boys basketball lost 83-49 to Cedar Grove-Belgium on the road in their non-conference matchup.
Campbellsport (6-11) got three-pointers from Noah Bobb from the wing and Pierce Kaehne at the top of the key against Cedar Grove-Belgium (12-2), putting the Rockets ahead 12-6.
The Cougars got another three-point make from Kaehne at the same previous spot to make the score 22-14 with Campbellsport trailing in the game.
The Rockets were leading 46-23 before Carter Gellings knocked down a three from the corner, but CGB closed out the half on a 10-0 scoring run to take a 56-26 lead in the halftime break.
Cedar Grove-Belgium maintained its lead in the second half to go home with an 83-49 victory against the Cougars.
