Cougars Boys Wrestling Advance Four Wrestlers to State

Posted

On Feb 14, the Campbellsport boys wrestling team finished in fourth place with 173.5 points to advance to the team sectionals in Kewaskum with their performance at the Port Washington Individual sectional.
Senior Jacob Allickson won his 120-pound class with a fall at the 2:52 mark to become the sectional champion, finishing 4-0 to advance for the third time in his career to the state meet.
“Jacob wrestled outstanding all day, collecting three dominant wins en route to his third state bid,” said Head Coach Alex Costello. “That puts Jacob on a very short list of Campbellsport to qualify for state three out of four years, which is an incredible accomplishment.”
“I have put in a lot of work over the past 14 years in this sport, and I am grateful for another chance at the state tournament to end my season on a high note,” said Jacob Allickson. “Everything I have learned about hard work, discipline, and showing up every day started in the Campbellsport wrestling program.”

“Being able to represent my school at state means everything to me because I’m representing everyone who helped me along the way from youth wrestling all the way through high school with every coach who pushed me, every practice partner who battled with me, and every teammate who came into the room ready to work but fell short of their goals,” said Allickson.
Gavin Pickering will finish his senior year by qualifying for state for the second time by winning his 138-pound class with a fall 5:09 into the match to finish a perfect 4-0 at the meet
“Gavin saved his best tournament for last, winning his 138-pound bracket to earn back-to-back state appearances,” said Costello. “Gavin went his entire high school career without winning a tournament by finishing second many times, but he broke through when he sealed the championship with a thrilling third-period come-from-behind pin to punch his ticket to Madison.”
Junior Logan Knoeck won his second-place match by rule to qualify for the state individual tournament for the second time by going 4-1 on the day in the 113-pound class.
“Logan put together two dominant victories before falling in the finals to the ninth-ranked wrestler in the state,” said Costello. “A strong performance and back-to-back state appearances for Logan.”
Freshman Trayton Renderman was able to win a second-place match by a fall at the 1:38 mark to finish 5-1 and qualify for the state.
“Trayton had a day to remember with becoming the first freshman boy to qualify for the state tournament since Drake Muellenbach in 2019 by having a big-time performance under pressure,” said Costello.
“Doing this as a freshman makes it even more special, as it shows that the years I have spent grinding in the wrestling room and offseason are paying off,” said Trayton Renderman. “Wrestling has taught me discipline, toughness, and how to get back up when things don’t go your way, not just in the sport but in life too.”
“Representing Campbellsport is even better, sharing with my teammates Logan, Jacob, and our captain Gavin, with us pushing each other all year and keeping each other motivated,” said Renderman. “I’m really thankful for my coaches, especially Coach Alex, who believed in me every step to push me to be better every day, and I am proud of how far I have come and everything it took to get here.”
The Cougars received the following seeds at the state tournament on February 26-28, with Allickson with a four-seed, Pickering a six-seed, Knoeck getting a ninth seed, and Renderman receiving a 13-seed at the Kohl Center.
“My heart goes out to our seniors who came up short of their goal of making it to state,” said Costello.
“A special shoutout to Porter Klotz and Zach Zimdahl on outstanding careers,” said Costello. “I couldn’t be more proud of what they’ve accomplished on just mat, but in the kind of young men they’ve become, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to coach them and excited to see what their futures hold.”
Girls Sectional at Campbellsport
On Feb 13, Campbellsport girls wrestling finished in third place with 117 points on their home mat at the Campbellsport regional.
The Cougars had Irleyn Woohether (107-pound class), Emersen Wissink (126-pound class), Savannah Ksioszk (132-pound class), and Mya Schraufnagel (138-pound class) finish in first place to qualify for sectionals on February 20 in Beaver Dam.
“Emersen had the most exciting match of the night. She was down early, but took the lead on a takedown in the third period and hung on to win 11-10,” said Head Coach Dan Heisdorf.
“Ireyln won by injury default because her opponent was sick,” said Heisdorf. “ Savannah and Mya pinned and teched their opponents in the final”.
