On January 16, Campbellsport boys basketball beat Omro 64-58 in the second game of the boys and girls varsity doubleheader of basketball at Omro in the Flyway conference matchup.
Campbellsport (5-8, 2-4) got an early 6-5 lead over Omro (5-8, 2-4) thanks to a floater in the lane from Carter Gellings.
Noah Bobb scored two points, and Quinten Cappozzo knocked down a three-pointer to give the Cougars a 15-13 lead in a very physical conference basketball game.
Trevin Shea hit a three-pointer on a nice kick-out pass and then converted a basket in the paint to retake the lead for the Cougars at 22-20, which was followed by a technical foul by Omro to extend the lead to 23-20 after a Gellings free throw.
The Cougars got four points from Bobb, including a tough finish at the rim before halftime to tie the score at 27.
Omro was leading 31-27 when Bobb converted another tough hoop before Gellings knocked down a three, then took a charge on the defensive end before scoring a two-point basket to help Campbellsport take a 37-33 lead over the Foxes.
Bobb got a steal on the defensive end, which was translated into two points, and then the Foxes got their second technical of the game, which resulted in gifting two more points at the free throw line from Gellings for a 41-37 Cougars lead.
Campbellsport got three-pointers from Bobb and Trent Schladweiler to push their lead to the biggest margin of the game at 58-49.
Omro got within two points at 58-56 with 2:15 left on the second half clock before Gellings made a game-sealing three-pointer to put the score at 61-56 in favor of the Cougars.
Schladweiler finished off the game with a basket for a hard-fought 64-58 conference road win.
Campbellsport was led by Carter Gellings with 18 points and Noah Bobb scoring 16 points for their fourth straight win.
“Carter played a great game with hitting clutch shots in the second half, and it’s awesome to see his hard work paying off,” said Head Coach Ethan Elliott.
“It was a physically demanding high school basketball game,” said Elliott. “We did a great job making things hard for them offensively with jamming cutters and good communication.”
At Ripon
On January 13, Campbellsport boys basketball beat Ripon 85-71 on the road in a non-conference matchup for their third consecutive win.
Campbellsport (5-8) held an 8-6 lead over Ripon (3-7) after Noah Bobb converted a steal into a layup before the Tigers went on a 7-0 scoring run to take a 13-8 lead over the Cougars.
The Cougars responded with ten consecutive points, highlighted by two three-pointers from Pierce Kahene to retake the lead at 18-13 in the game.
“They didn’t flinch early, and I could sense they were going to trust everything we worked on in practice,” said Head Coach Ethan Elliott. “I thought we elevated our defensive intensity to ignite that first-half run.”
Carter Gelling knocked a corner three-pointer to make the score 23-21 in favor of the Cougars, and the game continued as a back-and-forth affair. When Trent Schladweiler drilled a three-pointer assisted by Gelling, the Cougars took a 35-34 lead.
Kahene found Bobb on a backdoor layup to give Campbellsport a 41-37 lead at the halftime break.
The Cougars came out hot with their three-point shooting, with made threes from Schladweiler, Cullen Reis, and Deacon Cousert to expand their lead to 61-44 over the Tigers.
Schaldweiler hit his third three-pointer of the game to help Campbellsport push their lead to the biggest margin of twenty points at 68-48 over Ripon.
“That was as confident as I have seen us play offensively,” and everyone trusted each other and hit shots,” said Elliott.
Campbellsport got a strong finish at the hoop from Bobb to regain momentum in the game, with the score sitting at 74-65 in favor of the Cougars.
The Cougars finished the game at the free throw line, with Trevin Shea leading the way, making seven free throws to close out the 85-71 road win for Campbellsport.
“We weathered the storm and closed the game out strong,” said Elliott. “The guys made their free throws and executed against pressure.”
Noah Bobb led the way with 21 points, and Trent Schaldweiler added 17 points for the Cougars in their victory.
“We put a huge emphasis on getting our first road win, and we wanted to challenge ourselves to make a jump in our growth, and the guys played hard for that to happen,” said Elliott. “ Beating a team in your sectional is huge; the head-to-head with weighs heavily with the computer.”
Campbellsport hosted West Bend East on January 20 after print time and traveled to Springs on January 22 at 7 p.m.
