On July 27, the Campbellsport baseball legion team beat Waupun 13-3 in six innings to advance to the Wisconsin American Legion Baseball Association 51st Annual Class AA State Baseball Tournament in New London, August 1-5.
Waupun (8-5) was ahead 2-1 to start the third inning when Brody Nolan hit an RBI single for Campbellsport (12-5) to tie the game at two runs apiece after three innings.
Campbellsport scored five runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a bases-loaded, three-run double by Tyler Sachen to clear the bases with two outs to give Campbellsport a 7-2 lead.
The Cougars got the bases loaded again in the fifth inning, resulting in another five runs for Campbellsport, featuring RBI singles from Jace Goebel and Nolan to push the Cougars’ lead to 12-3 after five innings.
Campbellsport got doubles from Goebel and Nolan, resulting in another run to give the Cougars the 13-3 win and clinch the Regional Championship, advancing to the Class AA State Baseball Tournament.
“Jace and Brody each tallied three hits in the offensive explosion,” said Campbellsport coaches Dave Bothe and Gary Goebel. “Riley pitched five solid innings before handing the ball to his brother, Gage, who closed the sixth to seal the win via run rule.”
Campbellsport is advancing to the state tournament for the third time in the last four years.
On July 26, Campbellsport (12-5) beat Little Chute 7-4 thanks to scoring five runs in the second inning with two outs, featured by a Kyler Bowe two-run RBI single, then scoring two more runs in the third inning with two outs when Brody Nolan hit a two-run double to give the Cougars a 7-3 lead after three innings.
“We faced early adversity against Little Chute, falling behind 3-0, but they responded with timely hitting and plate discipline,” said Bothe and Goebel. “Jace and Kyler were a one-two punch in the heart of the lineup, combining for six hits and setting the tone offensively.”
Braden Bothe pitched six innings to help the team secure the 7-4 win and advance to the Championship game.
“Braden pitched with poise and precision, keeping Little Chute at bay the rest of the way,” said Bothe and Goebel.
On July 25, Campbellsport started their Waupun Regional with a dominating 9-0 win over Omro, featuring a six-run outburst in the third inning and tacking on three more runs in the fifth inning.
Campbellsport (12-5) was led by Owen Bong’s complete game shutout on the mound with 14 strikeouts and in the batter’s box with three runs batted in, in game one of the Regional.
“Owen was electric on the mound in a dominant performance and also led the offense to help secure the shutout,” said Bothe and Goebel
“This year’s senior class is especially notable, as they are the first group to have played all four seasons since the program’s inception in 2022 and have gotten the program to their third state tournament in the past four years,” said Bothe and Goebel.
Campbellsport will start their state tournament at Hatten Stadium in New London on August 1 against New London at 8 p.m., and they will play their second game of the tournament on August 2 with game times at 2:30 p.m. (Game 1 loss) or 8 p.m. (Game 1 win). The rest of the potential tournament games will depend on the results of the first two games.
