Donald Sylvester Volz passed away unexpectedly at home in Casa Grande, AZ, on Monday, April 7, 2025. Don was delivered by a midwife on the family farm in Campbellsport, on July 19, 1947. He was 77 years old.
Don is survived by his spouse, Theresa M. 'Tiger' Volz; daughters, Michelle L. Francis and Dawn L. Egelseer; three grandsons; one great-grandchild; sister-in-law, Deanna Volz; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Volz, Sr.; mother, Martha Volz; sisters, Bernice Karoses and Dolores Peters; brother, Joseph Volz, Jr.; and ex-wife, Ruby Volz.
Don went to St. Matthew’s Catholic grade school and Campbellsport High School.
He was a heavy equipment operator for Mueller Excavating full-time, worked part-time for Kloke Ready Mix, and Gale Company in Campbellsport.
Don loved to be the prankster – he was in the Campbellsport News quite often. He was an avid fisherman – ice, open water; and hunter. He was at home with nature, loved to be in the woods. He had black labs for bird hunting.
In February of 1985, he moved to Silverthorne with his current wife, Tiger Volz, as the mountains called him. He worked for F. J. Kent Pipeline. He started his own business in 1987, High Point Excavating, working with his wife. In 1995 they moved to Leadville, CO, and continued excavating in the mountains for 25 years.
Their hobby was trap shooting. They were members of Leadville Rod and Gun Club, Del Monte Gun Club, Pikes Peak and Pueblo Gun Club. They travelled across the nation competing. In 2017 Don and Tiger were inducted in the Colorado Trap Shooting Hall of Fame together. In 1999 Don and Tiger started wintering in Arizona and followed the Arizona Winter Chain trapshooting across the state. Youth shooting was very important to Don; he always said the youth was our future. He would help any club at a shoot, just jumped in even without asking. He was a man who was handy with his hands and always figuring out an easier way to get a job done. In 2006 Don and Tiger purchased Casa Grande Trap Club, with the first winter chain season in 2007. As the years went by, Casa Grande Trap & Skeet evolved and was updated from Western Traps to automated Pat Traps with Cantebury Calls. Amateur Trap Association competitions are held throughout the year and Special Events, Corporate Outings, along with Fund Raisers; one done annually for Breast Cancer and the proceeds go to the local Breast Cancer Center in Casa Grande for uninsured and underinsured in Pinal County. Don designed a spring “True Flight Springs” for the Pat Trap machine to save money for the smaller gun clubs. The motto…Set ‘em and forget ‘em. He was the center of Casa Grande Trap & Skeet as he would mechanic the machines and keep the voice calls working for all 13 traps. His wit and smile kept the shooters on their toes. He was loved by all and touched many lives along the way.
My LOVE, you will be so missed by many and the hole left in my heart will never heal. As our marriage vows state, “Till death do us part”. May you rest in peace, I will see you when…? FOREVER in LOVE with you, your wife, Tiger
