Campbellsport Cougar Girls and Boys are Conference Champs

Posted

Both the Campbellsport girls and boys wrestling teams won conference titles last weekend.
Cougar Girls
On Friday night, Feb. 7, history was made as North Fond du Lac hosted the first-ever girls Flyway Conference wrestling tournament. Eight girls from the Flyway schools were crowned conference champions, including all five from Campbellsport.
Irelyn Woolhether won the 107 pound title in an intense championship match. Woolhether jumped out to a 6-1 lead going into the second period before her opponent, Savannah Britton of Laconia, hit her with a head throw. Woolhether would fight off her back and get an escape, but found
herself down 8-7. In the third period, Britton would again try another head throw, but Woolhether was able to counter it and put Britton to her back and earn the pin.

At 126 pounds, Emersen Wissink would also win an exciting match. The score was deadlocked at zero heading into the third period. Wissink chose to ride and eventually turned her opponent, Shannara Guerra of NFDL, with a half nelson and earned the pin and the championship.
At 132 and 138 pounds, Emma Batzler and Mya Schraufnagel had no problems with their opponents on way to winning their titles. Batzler used seven takedowns to earn a 21-4 technical fall over Adalynn Last of Laconia. Schraufnagel built a quick 7-0 lead before pinning Alix Jahnke of WLA.
Abigail Ksioszk also won the 120-pound title uncontested as her opponent missed weight.
The team scores were as follows: Campbellsport 91.5, Laconia 49.5, NFDL/Springs 40, WLA 34, Lomira 25.
Cougar Boys
The boys needed to take first at the their conference tournament to at least force a tie for the conference championship with Lomira and the Cougars did just that winning the tournament with 235.5 points. Lomira finished with 194.5 points.
The Cougars crowned four first-time champions: Logan Knoeck, Conner Sitzberger, Porter Klotz, and Brock Bentz.
Knoeck, at 106, had no issues winning his conference title by pinning his opponent and then majoring Levi Schwartz of WLA in the finals 11-1. Sitzberger, at 165, also cruised to his title, winning by technical fall in the semifinals, before pinning Devin Robbins of Laconia in 3:30.
Porter Klotz, at 175, may have been the surprise of the tournament coming in as the three seed. After pinning his first opponent, he would run into Kolton Wagoner of Lomira. Wagoner teched Porter in the dual meet a few weeks ago. Klotz would find himself down 6-0 in the third period when Wagoner shot a double leg and Klotz executed a perfect rat poison putting Wagoner right to his back and pinning him. Then in the finals he faced the one seed, Nick Steffen of Omro, who came in with an undefeated conference record. After giving up a takedown, Klotz would get an escape and hit Steffen with a head throw and pin him in the first period.
Brock Bentz finished out his title by pinning his first opponent, and then in the finals he would dominate Noah Larson of Laconia 15-6.
Jacob Allickson, Jake Bowe, and Gavin Pickering would also reach the finals, but would all lose to their opponents and settle for second place. Erich Cappozzo went 3-1 on the day and finished in third place. Garrett Pickering, Ben Sabish, and Hudson McCarty would all finish in fourth place. Ayrdyan Meilahn and Zach Zimdahl would finish in fifth. Tony Hughley placed sixth.
The team scores were as follows: Campbellsport 235.5, Lomira 194.5, Omro 190.5, Laconia 187.5, St. Lawrence Seminary 115, NFDL 102, WLA 94.5, Mayville 43.
Girls Sixth at Preble
The Lady Cougar wrestlers traveled to Green Bay Saturday, Feb. 8, and finished sixth out 24 teams at the Preble tournament.
Emma Batzler went 4-1. She dominated her first four opponents to make the finals where she lost to 13th-ranked Addison Olson of Peshtigo 5-0. Mya Schraufnagel went 3-2 to finish in third place. In her quarterfinal match, Mya scored eight points in the final 40 seconds to pull out a 13-11 win. She then lost to the one seed, but in her third-place match, she beat her opponent from Pulaski 12-7, getting revenge when she lost to her earlier in the day.
Irelyn Woolhether also took third place, getting three pins along the way.
Abigail Ksisozk would go 2-3 and finish in sixth place.
Emersen Wissink would go 1-4, finishing in eighth place. Wissink had to wrestle two of the top-ranked wrestlers in the state.
The boys will have regionals at Kewaskum on Saturday, February 15, starting at 10 a.m. The girls will wrestle at Cedar Grove on Friday, February 14, starting at 5 p.m. The top four from each regional advance to sectionals.
