On the 18th of April 2025, Alice Ruth Furlong, 92, was called to her heavenly home at the Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac.
She was born on October 28, 1932, in the farmhouse of John and Marie (Kirchner) Schuppel, the fifth of their six children.
She walked 1-1/2 miles to attend a one-room grade school in the Town of Barton and graduated from West Bend High School.
Alice was married to Gary Boegel, had her children, and was divorced in 1955. As a single mom to Charles, Virginia, and Sheila, they lived in West Bend, Gilman, and Kewaskum; making a home and planting her garden.
She met Melvin Furlong at a dance when he invited her into a Circle-2-step. Alice and Mel were married on September 3, 1965, at St. Lucas Lutheran Church in Kewaskum. They blended their families on the farm in rural Campbellsport.
Alice was employed at Regal Ware for 25 years. She then attended Moraine Park Technical College to become a CNA. She worked for St. Agnes Hospital for 9-1/2 years as a home health care nurse before retiring.
She enjoyed gardening, road trips with Mel, reading, and book club. Alice also traced her family genealogy back to Germany and maintained current records for the extended family. She loved family gatherings, trying new recipes, and was a dedicated walker participating in multiple 5K walks well into her eighties. She could often be seen on her morning walks around Campbellsport.
Alice belonged to St. Lucas Ladies Guild. As a member of Lutheran Women’s Mission Society, she enjoyed attending many of their annual national conventions in various states.
Alice was Godmother to Gayle Ahlers Wald and Randall Justman.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Mel; an infant son; her siblings, John (Shirley) Schuppel, Helen (Edwin) Ahlers, Myron (Rita) Schuppel, and Donald (Alyce) Schuppel; nephews, Joel Ahlers, Glen Schuppel, and Dick Schuppel; nieces, Nona Rae Thums and Jean Peterson, brother-in-law, Harry Justman; and daughter-in-law, Marilyn Furlong.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her sister, Rita Justman; children, Charles (Mary) Boegel of Kewaskum, Virginia (Charles) Ketter of Eden, and Sheila (Allan) Strean of Fond du Lac; stepchildren, Jay Furlong of Fond du Lac, Linda (Tom) Robey of Helotes, TX, and Ronald (Jane) Furlong of Plymouth, MN. Also her beloved grandchildren, Christa (Erik) Aagerup, Seth (Stacy) Strean, Ryan Strean, Jesse (Kelly) Boegel, Keith Boegel, Kate (Vince) Conley, Sarah Robey-Bacted (Anthony), Laura Robey, Kelly Furlong, Kay (Chris) Wagner, and Kurt (Sydney) Furlong; great-grandchildren, Daisy (fiancé Jaden) Beavers, Cullen and Carson Priepke, Luxey Strean, Grace and Grant Conley, Louie, Charlie, Oliver, Frederick, and George Furlong, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation for Alice was held Wednesday, April 23, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at St. Lucas Lutheran Church, 1417 Parkview Dr. Kewaskum.
A memorial funeral service was held Wednesday, April 23, at 1 p.m. at St. Lucas Lutheran Church with Rev. Timothy Henning officiating. A private family interment was in Union Cemetery, Campbellsport.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Lucas Lutheran Church would be much appreciated.
Alice’s family wishes to thank the staff at SSM Health Hospice Home of Hope of Fond du Lac for the wonderful care she received there.
